    If you’re looking for terrific historical fiction, then Gore Vidal is your guy, especially his Chronicles of Empire series, including Burr and Lincoln. And since you mentioned Julian the Apostate, be sure to read his Julian. He was also one of the finest essayists this country ever produced.

    Another great, but rather obscure writer of historical fiction is Mika Waltari, whose novels are mainly set in times of great change, for example, the setting of The Dark Angel is the Fall of Constantinople, The Egyptian is about the reign of Akhenaten and so on. The main focus of his novels is man’s internal struggle between vice and virtue, worldly power and spiritual enlightenment.
