Alyssa Pry and Alexa Valiente are reporters for ABC News who were tasked with writing a teaser article for 20/20’s upcoming special on the “manosphere.” What they produced, “Women Battle Online Anti-Women Hate from the ‘Manosphere,'” was filled to the brim with lies and misinformation.
Pry and Valiente, among other things, falsely claimed that the quote ”I really wouldn’t mind shooting a [expletive] dead in the face, they are evil, all of them,” was an example of the kind of rhetoric regularly posted on sites like A Voice for Men. It was in fact taken from an article where it was used as an example of what is not acceptable to post on AVfM, and in fact will get you banned from the site instantly. Read more: ”Well, the 20/20 Piece on the ‘Manosphere’ is Obviously Going to Be a Trainwreck.”
Pry and Valiente also falsely claimed that A Voice for Men is a part of the manosphere. Founder Paul Elam had specifically distanced the site from the manosphere a year ago.
Additionally, Pry and Valiente also used feminist Anita Sarkeesian, creator of the “Tropes vs. Women in Video Games” series, as a source for the “misogyny” of the manosphere. Their claim that the gang-stalking attacks that happened against Sarkeesian last year were instigated by the manosphere is a complete lie; the attacks were the fault of 4chan. Not only that, Pry and Valiente completely ignored Sarkeesian’s dubious history, which includes defrauding her Kickstarter investors, repeatedly lying about her experience as a gamer, and failing to disclose her status as a paid consultant to video game publisher EA.
Finally, Pry and Valiente tried to claim that feminists frequently receive rape and death threats from members of the manosphere (without any sources), but completely ignored that manosphere writers receive multitudes more death threats from feminists than the other way around. For example, I was recently besieged with hundreds of feminists on Twitter and in my email calling for my murder and/or castration; read more here.
It’s clear from their biased and lie-filled article that neither Alyssa Pry or Alexa Valiente care about the facts when it comes to reporting. A journalist’s primary duty is to uphold and spread the truth, but Pry and Valiente have shirked their duty in favor of becoming smear artists. It’s an absolute travesty that ABC continues to employ two women so utterly devoid of morality and ethics. I’m writing this in the hope that it will keep others from being harmed by these two and their yellow journalism.
