How Do You Make Money Online?

I really hate it when people ask me what kind of online business they should start. The only way for you to find out how to make money online is to do the work and discover what works for you. In my triumphant return to YouTube, I explain how you can do this.

Well, hello there, boys and girls. I’m Matt Forney and today I want to talk a bit more about finding a subject to blog about and make money off of, or if you want to get all New Agey on me, following your bliss.

Now, I get a lot of guys e-mailing me asking me questions, “Matt, what should I blog about? What topic should I write about to make money, do you have any ideas?” I’m sort of with Aaron Clarey on this; I have a link to a video of his in the description if you want to know what I’m talking about. Whenever someone asks me a question like that, my immediate inclination is I just want to slap you across the fucking face. Because when you ask a question like that it shows that you’re fucking lazy, you’re fucking useless, and you expect everyone else to do the hard thinking for you.

Now, if I have something that you can use to make a lot of money, why the fuck would I give it to you? Why wouldn’t I use it myself? Obvious question. But there is a method, a way in which you can discover a way to make money, a topic to blog about, something that you’re passionate about and can make money off of, but like everything else in life it requires work.

Now, let me give you an example. About a few months ago, a friend of mine who recently finished grad school, he was studying film; he wanted to get into the blogging game. He was considering setting up a blog to dedicate to movie reviews and was hoping to make some side money off that. The advice that I told him: don’t do it, man, don’t do it. You may think in the abstract that you’ll be able to publish a blog continuously on movie reviews, but you don’t have personal experience doing it.

Writing is not some game, some vacation from reality. It’s legitimate work. Here’s a little fact for you: I write for a living but I don’t really enjoy it in the sense that, ooh, I look forward to getting up every day. It is legitimately like a job. There are days where I wake up at 9:00 in the morning, have my first cup of coffee, I’m thinking I don’t want to do work. I just want to lie on the couch and play video games or read a book or do something else, anything but work.

But like a real job, if you don’t do your work you’re going to suffer the consequences. If you wake up one morning and decide, I don’t want to go to work today, the boss will fire your ass. If you’re a writer and you get up and you don’t want to do the writing, well, guess what, you’re not going to make any money. And if you start a blog pigeonholing yourself into a very narrow subject matter, there’s a very good chance you’re going to end up bored and it’s going to go nowhere.

So, what I recommend for all first-time writers, people who don’t have experience doing this kind of thing, start a blog that has no particular focus or topic, and when it comes to writing on it write about whatever you want. It could be political rants, it could be movie reviews, it could be the most efficient way to pick your nose. Write whatever you want, whenever you want. Don’t feel inclined to publish every day if you don’t want to.

Now, you’re not going to make a whole lot of money with a blog like this, but the point of this blog is not to make money; it’s to do two things. One is to find out what you can consistently write about; and, number two, what other people want to hear from you. Because the things you want to write about and the things people want to read from you may not necessarily be the same thing.

When you’re dealing with a blog like this, a tier three blog as I would call it, after about maybe six months to a year of just blogging on the site you’ll have a good set of data, using Google Analytics and other website analysis programs. Using that data you should be able to determine what posts of yours, what articles of yours are the most popular, and you should be able to get a clear image of what people want to hear from you.

Now, the movie reviews you write may not be that popular, but say your articles on photography are. So you use this data to create another blog, a tier two blog, which does in fact have a narrow focus and a set schedule of publication. Now, a tier two blog can be monetized because it has a very narrow focus and it appeals to a very particular demographic; people who are interested in photography and interested in buying stuff that’s related to photography; cameras, books about photography, books of photos, stuff like that.

With this Tier Two blog what you do is that you finally establish a brand, you establish a suite of writing, a collection, a portfolio of work that people can use to identify you and use to know what you’re about.

Now, with this tier two blog what you eventually want to do is advance to tier one, which is creating a product for sale; a book or a DVD set or a webinar or whatever it is. That is where you’ll end up making the bulk of your money. Right now I do a lot of things to make money online, but by far the most profitable endeavors I’ve ever done are publishing my own books. If you go to, that basically pays my rent and most of my expenses every month.

So ultimately creating that kind of product is what’s going to make you the big bucks, but you have to go through this process beforehand because writing a book is a huge time investment and having it edited, getting cover art, that’s a money investment. You don’t want to sink a lot of money into a tier one product that nobody will buy. Going through this process of creating a tier three blog about anything and creating a tier two blog about a particular subject, you can cultivate an audience that will be interested in purchasing whatever you create.

Now, when you create this tier one product—that’s the other thing. With a tier one product you can’t simply stop at creating just one. Once you’ve created one, you have to go on to the next and the next and the next. There’s no real point where you can just sit back on the couch or at the beach as the money just comes in. You have to keep working. But what you use the tier two blog for at this point is cultivating a brand; cultivating, if you want to use the term corporate identity, it’s something like that. You want to use that tier two blog to lure in new audience members who will come and buy your tier one products. If you keep going at this process, eventually you will be able to make money off this.

Now, there are no guarantees in life, but this particular method is very effective. I’ve used it to structure my own online products and so have a lot of other guys I know even if they didn’t know about it at the time. You’ll start out with a blog that’s basically about nothing, aside from whatever happens to be on your mind. You cultivate an audience that is based off of what was most popular on an old blog, whether it was about picking up chicks or whatever, or even the articles about picking your nose. There could be an audience out there just looking to buy a book on the most efficient ways to pick your nose and how to get away with it in public without getting caught. I mean, it sounds disgusting, but, yeah, if you can make money off of it, go for it, dude. So ultimately that’s what you want to do.

This method will help you cultivate an audience; it will help you determine which products of yours, which ideas of yours are the most saleable at minimal cost to yourself. You won’t end up, say, creating a book that nobody will fucking buy because there’s no audience for it. You will only end up creating products that have an inborn audience who are interested in purchasing those products.

Now, it theoretically is possible to, say, skip this, but I don’t recommend it, again, because the chance is that you’re going to end up losing money and wasting valuable time on an endeavor that ultimately goes nowhere, it’s too high. If you follow this method of slowly cultivating an audience over months and years before you start, to the point where you can make money off this, you just have to put your nose to the—avoid cliches like that. You just have to do the work, simply, it’s like that. Do the work, analyze your data, collect data, analyze it, cultivate an audience based on that data, and from there the simoleons will flow.
