Protein Shake Recipes: 100 Delicious High Protein Smoothie Recipes to Build Muscle, Burn Fat & Increase Energy by SJ

SJ, author of Beastmode, has assembled a pretty effective collection of smoothie recipes in Protein Shake Recipes, his most recent book. The title is pretty much what it says:

The primary purpose of protein powder is to assist you in reaching your macronutrient breakdown , and, depending on your daily intake, it can be hard (and time consuming) to get your protein intake for the day in via solid food – this is where protein powder comes in to play. 1 scoop of protein powder has between 25 and 30 grams of protein.

To this end, Protein Shake Recipes contains three types of recipes: mass-building smoothies, fat-burning smoothies, and energizing smoothies. There’s no filler and no fluff: each chapter just lists the recipes and what you need to make them. SJ does go into the science of protein shakes somewhat in the beginning, but the emphasis of the book is on the recipes and nothing else:

Protein is protein. It doesn’t vary as much between brands as the manufacturers will lead you to believe. No protein is twice as effective as another, so why should you pay twice as much? Keep it simple and get the right type of protein as opposed to focusing on the brand.

My biggest problem with the book is the same one I had with Beastmodethe obnoxious hard sell techniques. Before you can even leap into the meat of the book, SJ assaults you with another offer for the free e-book Bodyweight Barrage. Again, I’m not going to bash a guy for trying to give value, but the way in which he does it really annoys me.

Aside from this, Protein Shake Recipes is a pretty useful and comprehensive collection of smoothie recipes. Whether you’re looking to cut fat or build muscle, the book’s breadth of information and low price make it worth the buy.
